Parent Support Group Tonight

Please join us tonight from 7:00 – 9:00 p.m. for our  monthly evening support group.

This support group is a great opportunity to vent, laugh, and share tips with other parents of sensory kids. It’s also a great place to share your experiences with local area therapy service providers and learn about new resources.

We meet at Monkey Nest coffee shop on Burnet Road in the private conference room at the back of the coffee shop. Look for a sign with the AASPDA logo. At each meeting there are always new people. All are welcome, and feel free to come and go as your schedule permits.  We hope to see you there!

The Importance of Sensory Integration

If you’ve every struggled to understand Sensory Processing Disorder, below is an informative video explaining, in plain language, how sensory integration is vital for navigating day-to-day life.

Community Gym Parent Survey

The Austin Area SPD Alliance is planning to open a community sensory gym.

This gym will be offered to the community-at-large.  It’s purpose will be a place where children of varying abilities and their families can come to play in a safe environment, and to reinforce their ongoing therapies.

We would greatly appreciate if you would take a moment to take our survey, so that we can build this community sensory gym to best meet your family’s needs.  The survey has 11 questions, and will take only a few minutes to complete. Thank you!

In the near future we will be publishing more comprehensive information about our plans for the gym.  If you are interested in more information now, please send an email to info@austinspd.net.

Sensory Friendly Play Date This Sunday

Please join the AASPDA community this Sunday, March 24th, from 10:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. for a sensory-friendly play date at Pease Park. map

Our monthly play dates are a fun, casual way to let our sensational kids romp, and for parents to meet, greet, and socialize, in a friendly and relaxed atmosphere.  You will be among understanding peers, where nobody is going to ask you “why is your kid doing that?”  Your kids can be themselves in a judgment-free group of parents with sensory children.  All families whose children have sensory processing issues are welcome to attend. We will have hot coffee to share.  You may want to pack a snack or picnic lunch for your family.

Look for a sign on the picnic tables next to the playground located on the south end of Pease Park.

Are you a parent or do you know a parent who is interested in purchasing private insurance which includes ABA coverage?

Free Hippotherapy Demo and Hands-on Opportunity

Chase Doverspike, MOT, OTR/L, HPCS of Cadence Therapy has offered our community  an opportunity to attend a free hippotherapy (horse therapy) presentation and demonstration, after which up to five children will have an opportunity to try it out.

This event will be on Sunday, April 14, at 1:00 p.m. The presentation will last about 15-20 minutes, and the demo about 15-20 minutes. After that the 5 children will ride the horses.

The address is: Manor Equestrian Center, 13406 Cameron Road, Manor 78653 (a few minutes from the Samsung campus on Parmer Lane). map

The horses will have had a full morning of therapy, so only 5 children will be able to ride the horses, for about 10 minutes each. If you are interested in having your child try it out, the first five parents who email me will be offered a slot. Chase will talk briefly with each parent about her/his child and parents will be required to sign waivers. She will forward to me the paperwork once we get a headcount of how many families will be attending.

If you are interested in attending please email send an email to info@austinspd.net with subject “Hippotherapy Demo”.

We are so excited that the AASPDA is gaining a larger audience and being offered special opportunities like this.

Music Therapy class tailored for children with SPD

Did you know that The Center for Music Therapy has developed a music therapy class which specifically addresses sensory integration and related developmental processes?

The class meets on Tuesdays from 3:30 – 4:00 p.m.

The class size is small, and the teacher is excellent with kids. In the course of music play, the children learn to discern loud from quiet, fast from slow, and integrate core exercises and free-form movement.

If you are interested in learning more, please contact Emma at 512-472-5016.
